The Greatest Gift of Christmas.

With Christmas quickly approaching, I want to keep my heart focused on the greatest gift, Jesus. Isaiah 9:6 is familiar, especially this time of year.  “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6 NIV) This Messiah that was prophesied changed the World forever. There will never be a greater gift than the Son of God who is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace!

Wonderful Counselor

To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his.” (Job 12:13 NIV) Wisdom, power, counsel and understanding belong to God. They are part of His character and He cannot be anything opposite a wise, powerful and understanding counselor. What an incredible comfort to know that the one who holds all wisdom listens to me and sees my struggles. Every struggle, every decision, every frustration is known by the Lord and He is waiting with open arms to give us counsel if we only ask. His Word is always available to us and He speaks to us through it. David said of the Word of God, “Your testimonies also are my delight; They are my counselors.” (Psalms 119:24 NASB) The Wonderful Counselor who came to earth thousands of years ago opens His arms to us daily and guides us through His Word.

Mighty God

More than the sounds of many waters, Than the mighty breakers of the sea, The LORD on high is mighty.” (Psalms 93:4 NASB) His might is greater than our human minds can ever comprehend. He is all-powerful and nothing is too hard for Him. I’m so often guilty of putting God in a box of my own making. I try and tell God how He should do things and what is best for me. Little do I realize that God is planning something far greater than what I’m telling Him He should do. I desire to trust in His might and not limit Him. When He came to earth and took on human flesh, He showed matchless might as He humbled himself in order to bear the sins of the World.

Everlasting Father

For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.” (Psalms 100:5 NASB) Our Everlasting Father will never fail us, because He is eternal, good and faithful. Christmas is a celebration of God, the Good Father, showing us His greatest act of eternal love. Sending His only Son to Earth with the ultimate purpose of Him dying on the cross, shows just how loving our Father is. He made a way for His children to be with Him, even though we are the reason we were separated from Him to begin with. If the Father hadn’t given Jesus, we would be hopelessly separated from Him for eternity. Glory to God, the Everlasting Father, who made a way for us to spend eternity with Him.

Prince of Peace

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.” (John 14:27 NASB) The Prince of Peace came to give us a peace the world can never offer. He offers us peace between God and humanity. A relationship that was painfully broken by our sin is made whole thanks to the peace of Christ. Once we have accepted the free gift of God’s saving grace, He walks with us and grants us peace in even our most difficult circumstances. Paul prays that the Lord will grant the church at Thessalonica peace in 2 Thessalonians 3:16. “Now may the Lord of peace Himself continually grant you peace in every circumstance. The Lord be with you all!” Because Jesus came at Christmas, we have the privilege of His peace in every circumstance.

It’s this Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace that we worship, because He is oh so worthy of our praise. It’s Him we serve wherever He leads, because He is worthy of our surrendered obedience. It’s Him we share with others, because He alone is worthy of sharing with the world. Thank you God for being our greatest gift!
